Many people take the environment into consideration when remodelling the kitchen. It is possible now, to get eco friendly kitchen materials without raising the budget. However it is not always possible to get these materials at the near by hardware store. When wanting to make an environmentally friendly kitchen, specialty stores will have to be used. They are smaller however, and won’t always have every option that a larger store would have. It is wise to spend some time online to thoroughly research the options before beginning.

Countertops

The options are vast when it comes to purchasing environmentally friendly items for a kitchen countertop. An easy to maintain option is concrete. It can be contoured into any shape, or however thick is desired. Granite is considered a limited resource, but it does not produce unhealthy fumes that man made substances can. Counters constructed from recycled material are gaining popularity as well. A beautiful terrazzo countertop can be constructed from old toilets, sinks, and bathtubs. These products would otherwise be littered in landfills.

Flooring

Bamboo is quickly rising in popularity for a flooring option, not just in the kitchen.  Bamboo is a type of grass which grows quicker then trees, making it a more renewable resource. Hardwood is a classic option that can still be eco friendly when it is purchased from a sustainable forest. It is also available as recovered wood from older buildings now demolished.

Appliances

An Energy Star appliance may cost more to being with, however the investment pays off in the long run. These appliances use ten to fifty percent less energy and water. New ranges are available as an induction unit. This newest way to save the environment causes the molecules to move, creating heat. The pot or pan is heated up instead of the burner. Not only does this method save on the cost of gas, but it is also safer.

Cabinets

Cabinets take up the major portion of a kitchen and need to be thought about carefully when considering what kind to purchase. The same options that are available for floors are also available for kitchen cabinets. For a budget conscious consumer, consider getting fiberboard or particleboard, the important thing to ensure is that the new cabinets do not contain urea formaldehyde.

Paint

When thinking about the paint you will put in your kitchen, choose a pain with low volatile organic compound ratings. Many common materials have high levels, which cause menacing fumes when used. Anyone with chemical allergies or sensitivities to such smells will find the gases released irritating. But even those without such allergies will benefit from the increase in air quality.

Recycling

In an eco friendly kitchen remodel, do not forget to make recycling a component. It is clutter saving to install a cupboard just to recycle. Use slide out drawers with bins, to separate glass, tin and paper from the garbage.
